Vivo is launching the mid-premium V series in 2022. There are two variants of the V23: the V23 and the V23 Pro. Among its main selling points are the colour-changing back glass, dual front-facing cameras, and the mediatek dimensity 1200 chipset, which promises good performance overall. In this review, we’ll talk about the Vivo V23 Pro, the brand’s latest phone.

Details of Vivo V23 Pro:

  • 6.56-inch Full HD + AMOLED display 90Hz refresh rate
  • Mediatek Dimensity 1200 chipset
  • 8GB or 12GB RAM + 128GB or 256GB storage
  • Dual SIM | 5G | 4300mAh battery
  • 108MP + 8MP + 2MP camera
  • 50MP + 8MP front camera
  • FunTouchOS12 based on Android 12

The price of the Vivo V23 Pro in India is Rs 38,990 /-

What’s good about the Vivo V23 Pro?

Vivo delivers on that aspect very well when it comes to sleek phones with a stunning design. I have found the V23 Pro to be one of the slimmest phones I have used recently. It has the same curved edge display as the brand’s premium X series. However, finding a screen guard can be tricky due to the curved edges. As I found out recently, it is even harder to get someone to put a screen guard on such a device.

Vivo calls the glass on the back of the phone Fluroite AG, a color-changing material. When the sunlight hits the gold at the back, it takes on shades of sea-green blue. I find it more interesting that the back is largely fingerprint-resistant and maintains a matte texture. The finish will remain smooth as it is with or without the cover. In the box, Vivo includes a plastic case that you can use.

The device, however, lacks a headphone jack because of its slim profile. MicroSD cards are not also supported. In the box, Vivo includes a pair of earphones along with a type-C to 3.5mm jack converter. These days, brands typically don’t include this in a box.

The 6.56-inch AMOLED display on the Vivo V23 Pro offers full HD quality. Games and watching videos on the display are bright enough for everyday use. In the sun, the display is easily readable. While it has a maximum refresh rate of 90 Hz, by default it is set to ‘Smart Switch’, where the phone automatically determines the most appropriate refresh rate based on usage scenarios. For better battery performance, I recommend sticking with this. During my review, however, I increased it to 90 Hz.

The phone is equipped with a MediaTek Dimensiy 1200 processor. It is based on the FunTouch OS 12 on Android 12 and has 8GB RAM+128GB for review. Vivo is also using virtual RAM, which we’re seeing in many other devices. In addition, another 4GB of storage can be allocated as ‘Extended RAM’, but it can be turned off from the settings.

Vivo’s V23 Pro performs comparably for daily use. While switching between multiple apps or playing games, there were no hiccups or stutters. Some games, such as Asphalt 9, Genshin Impact, and Mars: Mars, ran without a hitch. During these gaming sessions, I also liked the phone’s slim profile, which made it easier to grip.  After playing Genshin Impact for ten minutes, the phone started getting a bit warm towards the top.

The overall experience of setting up the Vivo V23 Pro was like setting up a stock Android phone, which was interesting. You should turn off the option for Vivo to show ads or other services when you see the ‘Recommended Services’ section in the setup. The experience will be less cluttered. Additionally, you will no longer receive unnecessary notifications.

Despite improvements in FunTouch OS 12, some aspects are frustrating. When making video calls or taking pictures in WhatsApp, Vivo has decided to add the ‘Beauty Filter’. In my opinion, this is unnecessary and marries the experience. In 2022, some of the preloaded apps are just as unnecessary as they were in the past.

The V23’s camera measures up well in bright daylight, capturing excellent details, and the colors are pleasant. Although the images are a bit more saturated than I prefer, most users will be happy with them. The skin tones are also more natural, but, in some lighting conditions, the camera still makes one look too white.

The selfie camera on the front provided natural and pleasing photos. It is easy to see the blemishes on my skin, which is thankfully not heavily processed. It performs well in night mode as well, and Vivo has managed to get the software right. When using the night mode, be careful not to move the camera.

What’s wrong with the Vivo V23?

When you switch to the other two modes (ultra-wide and macro), the quality drops considerably. The ultra-wide mode in particular is disappointing. Zooming in on photos taken in this mode obscures the details, even when the lighting outside is good.

The phone’s weak point is its battery. Vivo has chosen a 4300 mAh battery, which can last a day or more with moderate to heavy usage. The device supports 44W fast charging. The battery might not hold up for those who play a lot of games or are glued to their phones for hours on end. In some cases, other phones now offer 5000 mAh batteries or higher. For some users, this may be a deal-breaker.

Vivo V23 Pro Review

Most of the claims made about the Vivo V23 Pro are accurate. The design is beautiful, the performance is more than adequate, and the camera works well, though it could be better in some situations.

However, the battery life seems to be compromised. Yet again, this will depend on the user’s daily usage. There is also no microSD card, which could make this an unattractive option for some users.
